What is World Oceans Day?

Oceans Day was first declared as 8 June, 1992 in Rio de Janeiro at the Global Forum, a parallel event at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) which provided an opportunity for non-government organizations (NGOs) and civil society to express their views on environmental issues.

In 2008, led by Canada, the General Assembly resolved that 8 June would be designated by the United Nations as “World Oceans Day”. (General Assembly resolution 63/111)

Three Marine Debris Events Scheduled for World Ocean Day 2025 in Provincetown

In recognition of World Ocean Day on Sunday, June 8th, the Center for Coastal Studies Marine Debris & Plastics Program is  offering two opportunities for volunteers interested in “adventure cleanups” or trash tallies, and a third option, hosted in partnership with Friends of Cape Cod National Seashore, for a Herring Cove Beach cleanup. All events will take place in Provincetown.

  • 8 am – 12 pm: Adventure Cleanup at Wood End (breakwater)
  • 11 am – 1 pm: Herring Cove cleanup with Friends of CCNS
  • 1 pm – 4 pm: Trash Tally at location TBA
